The days of absolute control over party structure seem over for the man many see as a demi god, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. The lion of Bourdilon is not in the best of times; now that party faithful are rebelling against his hitherto acknowledged way running of the affairs of the party, especially those whom he groomed as acolytes and surrogates.
The Jagaban is popular for imposing his anointed person/s as consensus candidate/s on the party. It is said that virtually all persons occupying elective and appointive offices in Lagos State presently, are product of imposition largely influenced by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ironically, at the twilight of his first term in office as governor, Tinubu had a mêlée with the leadership of then Alliance For Democracy whose leadership comprises Afenifere and NADECO members, the party that brought him to power, over what he termed ‘Baba Sope’ (imposition). He argued that the elders and leaders of the party should allow the will of the people to prevail through internal democracy as opposed to the imposition that was the order of the day. However, the AD party leaders would not have someone who himself was a product of the said imposition to teach them morals.
Asiwaju’s fight with the AD party leaders was so intense that both parties were not ready to shift ground, so Tinubu used his status as governor to hijack the party structure and went ahead to form a new party called Action Congress (AC). The emergence of AC dwarf the existence of AD, so much so that many people believed that it is the AD that transformed into AC. The AC, after many criticisms of being a sectional party added ‘Nigeria’ to its name to make it a national party and later merged with three other national parties, ANPP, CPC and APGA to form the All Progressive Congress.
Today, like a dog that goes back to its vomit, Tinubu has become a custodian of imposition in the affairs of the party he formed on the excuse of internal democracy. His albatross however are the people he tutored to become political icon, notably, the incumbent governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, APC National Attorney, Dr. Muiz Banire… who are hell bent in seeing to it that the party’s constitution prevails on Jagaban’s imposition ideology.
His actions against the leadership of Afenifere and NADECO are now hunting him. Governor Fashola has refused to bow to Tinubu’s choice of Akinwunmi Ambode as an anointed candidate to take over from him. Rather, Fashola wants all interested aspirants to go for a primary election to test their strength and popularity. The wrangling in the party is increasing by the day.
There are complaints from market leaders about the imposition of young and inexperienced Folashade Tinubu as Iyaloja General on leaders who have been in the system even before she was born.
The wild fire ignited by the sudden emergence of Oluremi Tinubu as senator representing Lagos Central senatorial district is still burning and consuming all the party goodies as it were.
Now, there seems to be a generational shift within the APC which does not support paddy-paddy government. To this effect, Tinubu is troubled and Fashola fascinated.
It is a common saying that “what goes around comes around”
