There are indications from the presidency that President Mohammodu Buhari is reluctant to let go of the meritorious service of the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase. According to a source in the presidency, Mr. President is said to be impressed with the exemplary leadership qualities, committement and determination of the police IG at reforming the Nigeria Police.
The source said that, the IG is perceived by President Buhari as a break from the norm of the Nigeria police leadership in the past whose tenures had brought little or nothing to the overall improvement on service delivery and welfare of Police officers.
It is said that since Arase assumed office as IG about eight months ago, policing in Nigeria has taken a new shape for the better in the areas of combating crimes and protection of lives and properties of the citizens.
He brought to the fore, the use of information Technology to prevent and unravel crimes and criminals. And this has helped the force tremendously at apprehending notorious criminals, especially kidnappers and armed robbers.
In his eight month in office so far, it is said that Police/Public relationship has received a major boost, so much so that; interactions between police officers and members of the public that was before now, a cat and mouse situation, is gradually and steadily attaining the level of a relationship between likeminds. Given the various states visits by the IG and the lectures bothering on effective policing that he delivered at such visits. This has drastically reduced cases of police brutality and accidental discharge brought against the force in recent time.
Prior to Arase’s assumption of office, Police Hotlines were not functional which made it difficult for members of the public to report crime situations. But with the reforms going on in the force, the lines are now buzzing with calls and rapid responses. Asides that, the Police has created various social media interactive platforms where members of the public could easily interact and relate with the police with a view to cleanse the society of crimes.
While his focus is a crime free society, the IG is also leaving no stone unturned at ensuring the that his officers who are saddled with the responsibility of protection of lives and properties are well taking care of. Hence, the introduction of the Police Officers Welfare Package, which now includes Inspectors and rank and files who had been left of the welfare benefits in the past.
The source also said that, the IG’s effective cancellation of roadblocks and introduction of patrol vehicles across the country has reduced the rate of crime significantly especially on highways.
At the commissioning of the Police Legal Complex in Abuja recently, the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Mamhud Mohammed described Arase as “…an unprecedented Police IG” given that most of the reforms he has brought to the Police in his less than a year in office are all unprecedented.
Chairman House Committee on Police Affairs, Hon Jika Haliru described Solomon as one fine officer who has brought a lot of reforms to the Police within 8 months in office; what other could not achieve in years. He further posited that, it would be somewhat difficult to find a replacement for the IG.
However, in the face of these accolades on the soon to be retired IG, there are plans by some caucus in the house of Reps. who are have positioNed themselves to resist any attempt by the president to extend the tenure of the IG, on the grounds that they also have personal interest in the office. And as part of their plans, they have set up a committee to look into the finances of the Police since Solomon assumed office as IG with a view to counter President Buhari’s perception of IGP, Solomon Arase.
