The Nigerian polity has been awash with speculations of the impendind removal of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun as the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC. Some party stakeholders are said to have been scheming to unseat the septuagenarian former governor of Edo state. Many political watchers had thought he was not going to return as chairman when he decided to go on a 10-day sick leave about three weeks ago.
However, there were fresh concerns, following the visit of the Secretary to the Government of Federation, SGF, Engr. Babachir David Lawal, to the chairman recently. That visit was said to be the second in a week, it was learnt that the closed-door meeting with Pa Oyegun was to finalise arrangements for next week’s all important meetings of the party. There are signals that the APC national chairman may be asked to step down at the meetings scheduled for next week. The visits of the SGF, it was gathered, was to provide a soft landing for Chief Oyegun.
The move to send Chief Oyegun packing may not be unconnected with his recent political interest in who replaces Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomole at the forthcoming governorship election in the state and his stand on the emergence of Bello as governor of Kogi State in the event of the death of the party’s original ticket holder, late Abubakir Audu.
All scheduled meetings of the party will run as planned, with the caucus on March 21, BoT March 22 and NEC on March 24.
