The seemingly tall dream of Senator David Mark of the opposition PDP, to dramatically return as senate president for the third time suffered a huge setback, no thanks to the mind bulging revelation of his involvement in some offshore financial fraud as revealed by what is now known as the ‘Panama Leak Paper’
Some days ago, the confidential files belonging to Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, dubbed the “Panama Papers,” were leaked by an anonymous source to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, who then shared the files with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
The leak revealed that former Senate President David Mark was involved in running eight companies registered in the British Virgin Islands. Mr. Mark’s ex-wife was also implicated in the report for owning shell accounts.
Other Nigerians listed in the Panama Papers include Senate President Bukola Saraki’s wife, brother Laoulu, and his associates Obi Asika and Olufela Ibidapo. Former Delta State Governor James Ibori was also implicated.
Prior to the revelation, the PDP caucus has been holding regular nocturnal meetings were issues bothering on how to dramatically take control of Senate, in then event that Saraki is found guilty of the financial misconduct charges levelled against him by the CCT, as they effectively carried out on the floor of the red chamber on the day of the election that saw Saraki emerged Senate President against the wish of the APC party and an unprecedented opposition Deputy Senate President, lke Ekweremadu.
It would be recalled that a senator of the PDP extract few weeks ago boasted that his party will take over the Senate President’s seat should Seen. Saraki be removed.
The primary focus of the PDP in this regard is to ensure Seen. David Mark who has been relatively silent on the floor of the senate in recent times is returned for the third time as President of the sacred chamber, to increase the relevance of the party in government, and boost its chances of return to Aso Rock in 2019.
Interestingly, there is a caucus of APC senators that share in the aspirations of the PDP party, they are believed to be loyal to the embattled Senate President and would do everything to ensure that they either keep their principal on the seat or cede same to the opposition in revenge.
The APC unity group are however unperturbed, as they have started calling for the resignation of the embattled senator even before the outcome of the CCT trial.
So far, the intriguing political drama that has largely been likened to a popular Television satire, ‘game of thrones’ is taking too long to claim its first causality, and if news emanating from the camp of the unity group was anything to go by, Nigerians should expect many heads to roll in this.
The PDP is now restrategising as to who would fit into their plan.
