Consequence upon news making the round that APC leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has anointed an aspirant in the person of the former Accountant General of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode to replace Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, there has been wrangling within the caucus of the APC party.
While some are ready to go with the choice of Asiwaju; whom they said can never go wrong in that regard, the likes of governor Fashola and APC national Attorney, Dr. Muiz Banire are however not comfortable with the development, reason being that they also have their preferred choices.
Fashola on one hand is widely speculated to be bankrolling the campaign and networking of former commissioner for works, Obafemi Hamzat, while Dr. Muiz Banire has pitched his tent over former commissioner for health, Dr. Leke Pitan. As it stands, the battle for the APC governorship seat in Lagos state has become a tripartite of a sort.
Though Tinubu had at a meeting with all the aspirants held at his Ikoyi residence in November debunked the allegation, when one of the aspirants Mr. Tunde Disu alleged him of favouring a particular candidate. Asiwaju at the meeting had asked the aspirants to go for primaries and assured them of a level playing ground. Some of the aspirants believed and thank the party’s national leader for acceding to their demand, while others have their reservations.
There has also been a case of a gang up against Akinwunmi Ambode by other aspirants since that time. However, this has been laid to rest by one of the aspirants Dr. Leke Pitan. Though a source within the party’s hierarchy told Insidersaccount that the other aspirants are not comfortable with popularity Ambode is enjoying at present especially among party’s stalwarts and structure at the grassroot. They accused him (Ambode) of using the name of Asiwaju as backup for his campaign and networking.
In the event of this development, the other aspirants are working within themselves to pull resources together and come up with a consensus candidate whom they would all support to contest against Asiwaju’s choice at the primaries
Will the Jagan survive the conspiracy theory of the aspirants; has Tinubu built for himself a Frankenstein in the name of loyalist?
